Aid Decline In Myanmar Emphasizes a Humanitarian Emergency

HRRC urges for humanitarian aid to be immediately reinstated in Myanmar. The death of hundreds of civilians as well as the risk of many more is a severe threat to safety within the region and must be prevented at all costs. Lives of innocent civilians should not be overlooked and must be treated with the urgency and severity it deserves.

According to the UN Human Right Office, humanitarian assistance in Myanmar is on a steady decline, reaping multiple problems for millions of civilians. This report additionally warns that current reductions and suspensions in foreign aid are actively threatening locally led civilian protection efforts aimed at saving lives and ensuring basic access to essential services, even as military attacks on civilians continue. 

The consequences are cascading: civil society groups have been forced to implement cuts to their own support programs, closures, and layoffs, with ethnic media and women rights organizations hit disproportionately, as they often are in these circumstances.

The violence driving displacement has not softened. OHCHR confirmed a minimum of 702 civilian deaths during the reporting period, with 476 of them being attributed to air strikes. Meanwhile, nearly 3.5 million people are internally displaced, which is a drastic 72% increase in just one year.

The aid withdrawal strikes Myanmar at its most vulnerable points. Emergency healthcare is deteriorating due to military blockades and federal funding cuts. Additionally, crucial safe houses for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence have closed or operate at reduced capacity. 

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk captured the moral weight of the moment: “As if the people of Myanmar have not suffered enough at the hands of the military, they have now seemingly been forgotten by those outside the country”. More than 12 million people in Myanmar are projected to face severe hunger in 2026. This number makes the withdrawal of aid not just a policy failure, but a humanitarian one.
