HRRC's Response:
Amnesty International is warning that South Sudan is now facing circumstances that indicate a "new wave of repression". Due to the increasing instability, activists and civil community members are calling on the current government to step down and have been met with increasingly worrying responses.
According to this report, eight activists, three journalists, and two employees of a pro-democracy group have been detained or arrested for their actions. These actions have been the governments reaction to a declaration a month ago by the People's Coalition for Civil Action (PCCA) calling for people to peacefully protest.
HRRC joins the United States, European Union, Britain and Norway, in statements urging the South Sudan government to respect it's citizens right to protest peacefully and be heard without fear of wrongful arrest. Peaceful protests are a central necessity for citizens to make their views known and be heard by their government and the world.
