HRRC agrees with New Zealand's decision in denouncing the activities of the American Proud Boys and The Base and classifying them as terrorist groups. New Zealand's decision is critical for inspiring other governments to recognize actions by groups like the Proud Boys as an effort to subvert and coerce a country's government.
New Zealand has listed the American Proud Boys as a terrorist entity. This is the first time a U.S.-based group has made New Zealand's terrorist list. New Zealand also included The Base on its list, which is a neo-Nazi group led by Rinaldo Nizarro and is active in the U.S. and Canada. This is not the first time that the Proud Boys have been identified as a terrorist group after the January 6th insurrection.
New Zealand published two papers on June 20th, 2022 discussing the reasoning behind the designations of the American Proud Boys and The Base.
